The following positions are announced at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna:

3 University Assistants (prae doc) Dr. phil. starting 1 October 2025 for three years at 75% employment level (30 hours per week) with the possibility to obtain a doctorate.

Assignment to an institute will take place during the selection procedure. The monthly gross salary according to the collective bargaining agreement for university employees in salary group B1 currently amounts to Euro 2.786,10 for 30 hours per week.


The doctoral program in Philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna aims to deepen the historical and theoretical knowledge as well as the experimental research of problems in the field of art theory and cultural studies or the respective social contexts of the artistic and cultural field. The dissertation must meet international academic standards in the respective field.


Research fields with current supervision capacity are:

- Art and Media History, Ecology of Art and Media

- Design Theory (with a particular focus on fashion and textiles)

- Sociology of Art

- General Educational Research (with a particular focus on inclusion, practice research, emotion)

- Theories of Social Movements

- Research on Diaspora, Migration and Exile

- Postcolonial and Latin American Studies

- Ethics and Aesthetics of Care


Job description:

- completion of an individual academic dissertation research project

- employment is bound to continued enrollment in the Dr. phil. program and appropriate study progress (according to the Dr. phil. curriculum)

- engagement in teaching, research and administration, particularly in organizational, examination and administrative tasks within the scope of the respective institute

Requirements:

- a degree (Magister, Master or Diploma) eligible for authorization to study in the Academy's Dr. phil. curriculum

- extended abstract for a dissertation project in one of the subject areas mentioned above (max. 5 pages)

- proven knowledge of scientific work as well as relevant theory and methods in the proposed dissertation topic

- excellent written and spoken skills in the chosen dissertation language (German or English)

- general anti-discriminatory understanding and the willingness to further improve these skills

Desired qualifications:

- previous experience in university working contexts, e.g. study assistance, project staff, etc.

- organizational and communication skills- ability to work in a team

A jury will review all applications based on the submitted documents and choose those applicants to be invited for interviews. Interviews with selected candidates will take place on August 19-22, 2025 (online). Results will be made public shortly after.
