The Belvedere Research Journal (BRJ), an international, peer-reviewed, diamond open-access e-journal, invites submissions for its next issue.

The BRJ publishes original and innovative scholarship on the art history and visual culture of Central Europe and the former Habsburg Empire, broadly defined, from the medieval period to the present day. The journal is committed to advancing research into Central European art and culture, transcending national, linguistic, and disciplinary boundaries. We welcome contributions that contextualize Austrian and Central European artistic practices within wider international and global frameworks, and that engage with transdisciplinary perspectives.

We particularly seek submissions that challenge established narratives, explore transnational and transcultural exchange, shed light on the intercultural dynamics of the art world, and highlight artists, objects, networks and individuals that have been overlooked or understudied. Contributions that pay attention to historically marginalized perspectives are particularly welcome.

The BRJ offers two publication formats: Research Articles are argument-driven essays that present original research and offer new perspectives on the art and visual culture of Central Europe in the broadest sense. Submissions undergo double-anonymous peer review and should typically be between 20,000 and 50,000 characters long, including spaces and endnotes.Discoveries present new findings based on primary sources or fresh interpretations of individual artworks, objects or groups of works. These contributions undergo editorial review and should not exceed 15,000 characters, including spaces and endnotes.

The journal welcomes submissions from both established scholars and early career researchers, including PhD candidates. Articles are published in English. For authors writing in Central European languages, the BRJ can arrange for accepted manuscripts to be professionally translated. All accepted contributions receive professional copy-editing, and the journal handles the acquisition of image rights. There are no article processing charges.

Submissions should adhere to the journal’s author guidelines: https://ahnp.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/journals/brj/about/submissions

Inquiries about potential submissions are welcome at journal@belvedere.at
