HBK PROJECTS Curator Grant

Braunschweig, Apr 1, 2024 - Mar 30, 2025 Application deadline: Aug 30, 2023

Ellen Fischer, Braunschweig University of Art

The HBK Braunschweig is an internationally oriented, artistic and scientific university with the right to award doctorates and habilitation. With around 1000 students in the fields of fine arts, art education, performing arts, design, visual communication as well as art and media studies, the HBK is one of the largest art universities in Germany.

1. The HBK Braunschweig will award a curator scholarship for a period of one year from April 1, 2024.

2. The aim of the curator scholarship is to intensify the cooperation between the HBK and the museums and art institutions in the region or in Lower Saxony. The scholarship holder is expected to design his/her own exhibition project in cooperation with a museum or an art institution in Lower Saxony, calculate it, communicate it professionally internally and externally, prepare it, if possible realize it and make it public through an outreach and accompanying program might. Since the format at the HBK is completely new, the scholarship holder has a lot of leeway for their own ideas and design in coordination with the university management. He/she can also fall back on the university's attractive network. A close cooperation and a connection to the work of the teachers and especially the students of the HBK is desired. At the end of the funding, a short final report should provide information about the activities undertaken and, from the point of view of the funding recipient, contain information on how a possibly permanent scholarship should be optimally designed.

3. In addition, it is expected that the scholarship holder will enrich the curatorial practice at the HBK by collaborating with the artistic scholarship holders of Braunschweig Projects and curating their final exhibition. The scholarship holder therefore takes part in the jury meeting to select the Braunschweig Projects scholarship holders.

4. The prerequisite for funding is that the applicant has already gained curatorial experience in Germany and abroad and the respective project proposal expects an important contribution to the further development of the public relations cooperation between the HBK Braunschweig and a museum or an art institution in Lower Saxony leaves.

5. Funding is provided through the awarding of scholarships in the amount of EUR 1,250 per month over a period of 12 months. An equipped workplace at the university is available. A project cost grant of up to 4,000 euros will be provided to support the exhibition activities. A budget of EUR 2,000 is available for travel. April 1, 2024 is the planned start of funding. An apartment in Braunschweig cannot be provided.

6. Presence on site and involvement in the activities of the HBK Braunschweig are desired. The scholarship holder is also given the opportunity to increase their own teaching skills as part of a - separately remunerated - teaching assignment and to cooperate with lecturers and students at the HBK Braunschweig.

7. Applications must be submitted using the application form by August 30, 2023, with a specific reference to the scholarships advertised, to the following email address: kuratieren-stipendium@hbk-bs.de (email inbox by 11:59 p.m., shipments arriving later will not be considered).

8. The Executive Committee of the HBK Braunschweig makes the decision on awarding the curator scholarship based on the recommendation of a specialist jury, with particular consideration of the development potential of the curatorial cooperation between the HBK and a museum or an art institution in Lower Saxony.

The e-mail must contain the following documents: 1. Completed and signed application form with personal details, curriculum vitae in tabular form, curatorial career with previous funding in brief, description of a curatorial project that is to be realized during the duration of the scholarship (PDF File, max. 1 MB / file name: CV_Name applicant)

2. Documentation of the curatorial work: portfolio, with links to video and audio files available online, possibly with a password (PDF file, max. 12 MB / file name: portfolio_name of applicant)

3. External reference from the university, art and culture sector (PDF file, max. 1 MB / file name: reference_name of applicant)

The e-mail must meet the following conditions: - with subject curator scholarship - complete documents - file types, file names, file sizes maximum 15 MB in total, as described above - e-mail receipt by August 30th, 2023, 11:59 p.m. at the latest
