Travel grants for young researchers attending the 38th German Congress of Art History

Thanks to the generous support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation, 40 travel grants are available for young researchers attending the 38th German Congress of Art History (25–28 February, Munich) and the Young Researchers Forum taking place there.
Application deadline: 4 January 2026
Organised by students and doctoral candidates at LMU Munich, the Young Researchers Forum serves as a platform for visibility and networking among the younger generations of art history researchers. In a two-part panel, short presentations by students and young researchers provide a panoramic view of current topics, methods, and issues in the field. A panel discussion based on these contributions – prepared by means of a broad survey of students – brings these perspectives together with representatives of the established professional community and highlights common concerns, structural conditions and challenges in higher education policy. The program is framed by informal exchange formats and practical insights into professional life, which will deepen the dialogue across institutional boundaries. The Young Scholars Forum invites participants to bring their different professional and biographical backgrounds into a joint discussion, thereby developing a reflective view of the future of a diverse, international art history.
Students and doctoral candidates from Germany and abroad who wish to actively participate in the Young Researchers Forum and its discussions are eligible to apply. The scholarships cover the conference ticket as well as reimbursement of travel expenses (domestic: up to €160, international: up to €320) and accommodation costs (25–28 February, up to €110/night) upon presentation of the original receipts. Places will be awarded to:
- 10 speakers (7 from Germany, 3 from abroad) who present a research interest within the framework of the Young Researchers Forum in a short keynote speech (5 minutes, in English if possible). Persons who do not require a travel grant due to their place of residence in Munich are also expressly invited to apply for this category.
- 30 participants (25 from Germany, 5 from abroad) who are willing to write a report on an event at the congress for L.I.S.A. – the science portal of the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
The following must be submitted:
- For speakers, an exposé of the research to be presented; for participants, a letter of motivation explaining how their own research will benefit from attending the conference (up to 250 words each)
- A CV (1 page)
- A copy of your enrolment certificate
Please send the documents to the following address in a single PDF file: stipendien-nachwuchsforum@kunstgeschichte-kongress.de. Notification of the award will be sent by mid-January 2026.
The planned panel discussion will be based on a survey. We kindly ask you to participate: https://forms.gle/ohar8LqvxpD9kSZj8
