Workshop grants @ Court of Cultures
Do you have a skilled craft and ideas, but no time or space to put them into practice? Are you talented with your hands and looking for a place where you can experiment and develop your skills through exchange with others? Our scholarship program offers two craftspeople space and a stipend for six months. The Vienna Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art provides a stimulating, dynamic environment and supports you with its extensive network and knowledge base.

The "Courtyard of Cultures" combines craftsmanship and cultural work. For us, working with our hands is an opportunity for unexpected encounters and engagement with the world around us. The "Courtyard of Cultures" project is part of the Vienna Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art. We organize a program of events that engages people from diverse backgrounds and gives them a voice. At its heart is Vienna as a city shaped by migration and diverse cultural influences. In our workshops, we invite participants to sew, build, cook, learn, discover, and create, but also to negotiate and unlearn together.

Who we are looking for and what we expect:
Willingness to conduct workshops and share knowledge
Residence in Vienna or nearby
Active participation in the atelier community
Regular use of the workshops by the scholars
Presentation of results at the end of the program
Applications from people with a migration background are explicitly encouraged

Program information:

Scholarship: €1800/month (insurance and taxes are the responsibility of participants)
Who can apply:Artisans, craft artists, chefs, restaurateurs, designers, artists, and entrepreneurs with a strong connection to craft, including social entrepreneurs.
Topics / keywords:Furniture design, fashion, sustainability, food cultures, ceramics, textiles, wood, gastrosophy, circularity, conviviality, jewelry, crafts, transcultural dialogue.

Language: German or English
Selection process:A jury decides on the scholarships, consisting of the curatorial board of Hof der Kulturen and one member of the project team. Main criteria: the applicant’s current (work) circumstances, the quality and feasibility of the project, and how the proposal fits the Hof der Kulturen program.
Application requirements:
Fill out the form on the website and upload a PDF with motivation letter, project plan, and CV.
Portfolios or image collections of your work are welcome.
Individual feedback on rejected applications is not possible. A rejection does not imply poor quality—only that the proposal did not fit.
Applications are only accepted from individuals.
About the Museum:The Vienna Museum of Folk Culture is one of the major international ethnographic museums, with extensive collections of folk art and historical and contemporary European everyday cultures. The museum is currently closed for renovation (since October 2024), and Pavilion 1 at Otto Wagner Areal is used as a temporary space.
About Hof der Kulturen:The goal is to provide working spaces for artisans. In the ateliers and workshops, users work, learn from each other, exchange ideas, and unlearn together.
What is a “workshop”?At Hof der Kulturen, the term “workshop” is understood broadly. We welcome any craft-related ideas and are happy to discuss how your idea fits into the project.
Available spaces:Two rooms in Pavilion 1 at Otto Wagner Areal are available, shared by the scholars. One is already set up as a woodworking workshop and is used by the museum. A kitchen is also equipped. Additional spaces will be furnished as needed.
