The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is looking for an Artist in Residence for one year | Vacancy for a Paid position (stipendium and budget)

At the Rijksmuseum we tell the story of 800 years of Dutch history. With a collection of over 1 million objects, exhibitions and educational programs we bring this history to life.

The Rijksmuseum is looking for a

Artist in Residence

for a year

In 2025, the Rijksmuseum will start an annual Artist in Residence program for one artist. This program includes a grant and a budget to produce one or more works of art. In addition, there is room for artistic research, experimentation and the realization of new work.

The programBoth Dutch and non-Dutch artists who are well-informed in the Dutch art world are eligible for this residency.

You will have access to our collections, library, archive, laboratories and museum expertise. The program also offers you the opportunity to participate in workshops and excursions to promote the exchange of knowledge.

The Rijksmuseum invites top candidates to submit proposals for an artistic project. The proposed project is preferably research-based and reflects on, responds to and interacts with the collections and/or the institutional history, activities and function of the Rijksmuseum. The selected artist is expected to create an artwork or artistic intervention to be exhibited in the museum.

Research and artistic processWe welcome independent proposals that offer new perspectives on the collections, history and activities of the Rijksmuseum, and that explore these. You are free to follow your own artistic process and working method. There are no restrictions on the genre, medium, subject or format of the artwork(s). Provided that this does not conflict with the policy and ethical principles that we adhere to, or with the safety of the collections, the building, the visitors and the staff.

The programme offers the Artist in Residence the opportunity to carry out some of the artistic activities in the Rijksmuseum. We hope that the selected artist will seek connections with the research programme of the Rijksmuseum Fellowship. Therefore, we are particularly keen to receive applications from talented artists who consider research an essential part of their practice.

The residency runs from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025. (Please note: it is not possible to extend the residency after December 31, 2025.)

Working at the RijksmuseumYou will be provided with a standard workstation, with desk, computer and access to our work facilities. We will make every effort to accommodate specific requests for a workstation on the museum grounds. We expect to be able to present the created artwork(s) in the context of the museum building, the collections, the gardens or the online environment.

What do you bring? You have a proven, high-quality track record as an exhibiting artist. You have experience working with large-scale commissions and public institutions, which gives you the experience and skills needed to navigate the critical environment of the Rijksmuseum. In addition:

  • Are you a mid-career Dutch artist or a non-Dutch artist who has lived and worked in the Netherlands for at least two years and is well-informed in the Dutch art world?

  • Formal art education is not a requirement, but a completed bachelor's and/or master's degree is an advantage.

  • Do you have demonstrable experience with a research-based practice?

Artists from all disciplines can apply.
