DRAWinternational – Drawing research centre A place of research, experimentation and the production of drawing in all its forms.

Above all, it aims to be a place to develop and reveal the various processes of contemporary drawing and to share and exchange ideas between the artist and the public.

DRAW – drawing, research, action and works

The centre welcomes international artists who, for several weeks take possession of the studios to reflect, experiment and create works and who, during this time, invite us to discover their way of thinking and making contemporary drawing.

DRAWinternational set out some years ago to celebrate drawing ‘for itself’ and ‘for others’ i.e. as it relates to other representational media. Our artists-in-residence programme attracts artists who wish to extend their professional practice and theoretical understanding, with the very issues reflected in contemporary society. That is, through human endeavour, reflection, discourse and action.

Duration of residency

Residencies are for a period of 6 weeks minimum and up to twelve weeks.

Accommodation

Artists have shared self catering accommodation with private bedrooms in a medieval building in the heart of the village. The centre provides an evening meal for all artists once a week, as well as on special occasions, using fresh local produce to create delicious menus that incorporate regional specialities.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance

Our provision is both theoretical and practice based, working with artists when required, assisting them to be more objective, thus distancing themselves somewhat from the aesthetic object. (The Phenomenology of Aesthetic Experience, 1973, Mikel Dufrenne). We work with professionals in the applied and fine arts, architects, designers, and writers. These artists come from many different countries and bring with them many diverse experiences, but all have something in common, a humanity and a passion for drawing. Additional facilities include, flexible studio space for large scale works/installation/performance/music, a technical workshop, etching press, top loading kiln and technical assistance.A gallery space for works in progress or completed works is also available when appropriate, besides our regular open studio events.

Studio / Workspace

Artists are allocated individual studio spaces to suit particular project requirements, with unlimited access.

Fees and support

Academic support and access to relevant documentation. Regular discussion of work to include individual and group critiques and practical workshops if requested. Documentation of studio practice. Support for artists to encourage integration within the community.Organisation and promotion of Open Studios event. Editing and translation of written text.Internet access (wifi) for personal laptops. Cultural visits. Artists are required to raise their own funds, we do however, provide the necessary documentation to support applications for funding and references for future career opportunities.

Expectations towards the artist

We encourage artists to share and exchange their different approaches to drawing with the public, through open studios/studio visits, workshops, seminars and performative drawing events.
