Feminism of That Big Naked Medusa Statue By the Courthouses

Public art is hard to do well,

The bronze sculpture of Medusa With the Head of Perseus — a 2008 sculpture by 47-year-old Argentine craftsman-artist Luciano Garbati now installed across from the courthouses on Centre Street, placed here by the New York City Parks’ Art in the Parks program.


But some have taken offense at the statue’s lack of pubic hair, which they say reflects idealized beauty conventions. (More humorously, the sculpture has also spawned jokes about whether that part of Medusa’s body was also covered in snakes).

Don’t even try to figure out why it now stands across the street from the County Criminal Courthouse. This monstrosity is sure to be a lightning rod for zealots fake feminism, protesting nudity, and a co-star in endless selfies.
