Deadline: May 15, 2021

Vesterålen is an archipelago in Northern Norway. We have midnight sun, polar light, and fresh arctic air. It's a region of five municipalities, and we welcome 2-3 artists in every municipality.

Vesterålen has 30 445 inhabitants, 1330 islands, 19 bridges, and 1 national park. The archipelago is located 200 km north of the arctic circle, bordering on the Lofoten islands in the south. Although the climate is mild thanks to the life giving Gulf Stream, we experience huge contrasts in weather and light through the seasons: From the dark and stormy polar night with northern lights, to comfortable summer days were the sun never sets.

AiRV is Vesterålen’s collective boost of art with an international dimension and a firm local foundation, along with varying areas of focus in each place:

Art/nature/play

Art/costal culture

Art/science/technology

Art/urban spaces

Art/community

The aim of these residencies is to help develop identity, knowledge, awareness and experiences. We seek to make Vesterålen visible to others and to reinforce cultural cooperation in the region. The project is intended to leave visible traces and contribute to local development.

We are looking for a group of artists, or up to three individuals who would work alongside each other. Two residencies per group, lasting ten days over a period of two years.

These calls are open to any professional artist, regardless of gender, region or religion. We welcome established, mid-career and emerging artists, curators and writers. We invite practitioners from any art-related discipline, cross-discipline practices are also welcome

We welcome applicants who live and work in Europe (EU, EEA and UK)

The first residency stay will be used to become familiar with the local community, do research, meet local citizens and partners in collaboration, and begin the creative process.

During the second stay of the residency, we wish to focus on presentation and, if possible, link this to already existing cultural events. This phase involves the production of a final work that will be shared with the public.
