The residency program provides the artists in Athens

Studio Space & Professional Development

The residency program provides the artists with large, open format studio spaces in a repurposed commercial building with abundant natural light. We’ve also organized professional development throughout, including studio visits, cultural events around Athens and workshops. It is our mission to allow for the exchange of ideas and to provide for the opportunity to form lasting professional relationships with international colleagues.

“Set in an open-format studio space in one of Athens’ most dynamic & diverse neighborhoods, I was able to engage in a truly experimental studio practice exploring the creation of natural dyes from local markets as well as working with large-scale photographic practices inspired by 20th century Greek cinema.”

Application & Funding The Athena Standards Residency has resumed in-studio residencies for international artists. We are also offering a Virtual Residency program. We are accepting applications for our 2022 in-studio sessions for Spring, Summer and Fall Residencies. As an artist run organization, we strive to keep a balance between quality and cost. It is important to us to be able to offer the quality of studio space and the scope of professional development and opportunities that we do. The cost of the residency program is €1200 for one month or €2200 for both months. The cost of the virtual residency is €350 per month. Artists may apply for a one-time, need-based grant of €300, to be applied to the cost of the residency.

THREE RESIDENCY PERIODS

We have three residency periods during the course of the year; our Spring Session is April-May, our Summer Session is June-July, and our Fall Session is September-October. We review applications for Spring and Summer Sessions on January 15, and for Fall Session on June 1.

STAY LONGER, EXPERIENCE MORE

We encourage artists to consider staying more than one month in order to gain a deeper understanding of Athens as a cultural hub. The cost of the Residency is €1200 for one month and €2200 for both months within the residency period.

EXPLORE THE CITY

The residency program provides the artists with studio space in a re-purposed commercial building with other artists; Greek and International. We also provide recommendations for exploring Athens, including gallery openings, museum shows and events of interest.

MAKE IT COUNT

As an artist run residency we offer the amenities that we know artists want; top notch studio spaces, one-on-one professional development, and an artistic community and contacts that will carry into the future. All at a cost that an emerging artist can afford.

A Cultural Hub

documenta 14 put the city of Athens on the map of the contemporary art scene, and as a result there has been an influx of art practitioners to Athens. The city continues to be an artistic hub, welcoming people from all over the world, who have found new ground to express their ideas. We look forward to holding a curated exhibition of former artists-in-residence at the Enia Gallery in Piraeus in 2023.

“Living & working in Athens was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The city of Athens is unique, inspiring, & complex and the vivacity for life, art, & history across the landscape of the city makes it incomparable to anywhere else in Europe.” — THAIS GLAZMAN
