The Master of Film: Artistic Research in and through Cinema at the Netherlands Film Academy is a specialized two-year research program for filmmakers and artists. It emphasizes the critical use of cinema as both an art form and a tool for research. This allows students to immerse themselves in filmmaking as a means of knowledge production and experimentation.

The program provides dedicated resources, including time, space, and a budget, and promotes a practice-driven approach where filmmaking and critical thinking merge. By placing cinematic practice at the core of artistic inquiry, it encourages the exploration of new possibilities in film, prioritizing questions and discovery over finished results.

Open to all moving image makers with a bachelor’s degree & professional experience

The Master’s Degree Program in Film is open to all moving image makers with a bachelor’s degree. This includes not only a degree in film or any of its sub-disciplines, but also in the field of visual arts, digital media or performance arts. With a BA in a completely different field you can also apply as long as you have enough professional experience as a visual maker.

Potential candidates are expected to have at least four years of professional practice in the visual arts and/or (also) working with visual media. Since one of the foci in this programme is learning through making, having enough experience in working with audiovisual techniques as well as being able to deliver a portfolio with (moving) images for your application is a must

Information sessions for new students
